SCC crash to a 7 wicket loss because of poor battingScorecard coming soon. After a superb batting display the previous weekend, the SCC batsmen chose to do the exact opposite in the rematch against Surrey Hawks on July 12th. Some poor shot selections and a complete lack of application were the main causes for SCC being all out for 82. Inspite of not having even a half-decent score to bowl at, SCC bowlers almost made a game of it by some precision bowling and taking the first two wickets early in the game. However, some very poor fielding and dropped catches spared Surrey Hawks some jitters. Full game report coming soon.

- Richard C. Sanderson - In Memorium
As a prelude, I should apologise for the lateness in getting this to you at SCC. Richard passed away March 7 or 8, 2008, in what have been deemed accidental circumstances. A memorial was held for his life at the Floral Hall at Van Dusen Gardens on March 15 of this year. (Matt B., Wayne Best, Paul Harder, Greg Mitchell, David Walker were there from the club.) It was a nice event, pleasant and fitting. Alan and Rose conducted themselves with a great deal of dignity.
In addition, just prior to moving (in what has been a very busy time) a letter arrived from Richard's parents, Alan and Rosalind, thanking Shaughnessy for the donation. Here is the letter typed in full:
Wednesday, April 16, 2008
Dear Members of SCC:
I would like to thank you for your kind donation to Coast Mental Health Society in Richard's memory. It means a great deal to us that friends like you would take the time and effort to make such a contribution. We know that your donation will help others, who suffer from a mental illness, to find health and happiness. We know too that Richard, if he could have known, would have been very touched by your thoughtfulness.
With kind regards,
Alan and Rosalind Sanderson
We never know when we are going to die. It is a lesson I repeat to myself time and time again, gently reminding myself (with no judgment) that our time is now because we do not have a handle on when our death will come. It will come without warning, and will not wipe its feet on the way in and out the door...
Since this time last year, I have lost my grandfather and two friends. I saw my grandfather 10 days before his death. I wrote my old Georgia Straight buddy Dave Watson a few weeks back. He had undergone chemo and I wanted to write him a letter. I sent an email, as faint as you like. As faint as you like he replied with his mailing address. I never got to write him in longhand, as he passed away before that could occur. No regrets, just a reminder of impermanence. And Richard too has passed on from this life, and with it we can talk about what that means. And I am sure we all have our own interpretation. Here is Richard's essence through my lens.
I joined UBC III in 1999, having met Paul Harder and an Aussie dude at Brockton Oval one weekend, after Dave Eddy and VJ had opened the batting. Eventually I was assigned to Richard's team, and I was rediscovering the game because, like Gary Seebaran, I had learned cricket early, but had let years lapse and precocious skills withered somewhat on the vine. I got some of that back and became a staple in 1999, turning out for RCS week in, week out. Richard struck me as warm, fun, eccentric and persuasive. And I saw things under his captaincy that maybe cannot be relayed in full. Too many games, too many stories. Here is a selection of highlights and then I will sign off this Pom Press.
1. Richard broke his finger dropping a sitter on my debut against North Shore IV in 1999 at Trafalgar. Instead of showing pain, RCS brushed it off and lamented the drop. When the NS skipper threatened to take the game away from us with the bat, Richard moved in to mid-off, and someone sent up a full toss, which NS skip duly whacked on the full to RCS. RCS held on, waited, winced, and finally let out a YEEAAAAAAA. It is the loudest cry that I ever heard on a cricket field. (That beats Harder's CRICK-ATT.)
COURAGE!
2. Richard was not always polished with cricketing skills learned in Canada, but somehow he made it work. Ditto the opposite sex and his interactions there. He was a player all the way, and I have no doubt that women could not help themselves tripping over RCS' charm and looks. However, in this area I saw that RCS showed those of us close to him a certain insecurity, which he nevertheless managed to hide somewhat. I never saw him master this area completely, though there have been pleasant cricket widows that have come and gone thanks to RCS. I can't help but think they are richer for the experience, and my eyes often popped out at his audacity. "Did he just say that?"
CHIVALRY!
3. RCS had hand-eye coordination. He hit the ball hard when he connected, but missed a few straight ones. He did not bowl, but he had a good brain and could manouver a field and motivate.
MOTIVATION!
4. RCS had the best parties as long as you were prepared to go toe to toe in the drinking arena. A party was held at RCS' parents in 2000 after MB filled in as skipper for one game (in a forecast of things to come) and I ended up getting a ride home with Lee McIsaac and leaning against a tree on East 51st Avenue and puking. I think it was more or less the last time I did that due to alcohol, and you can quote me on that.
CATHARTIC!
5. RCS and I remained friends, despite all the attendant problems described in light of his death. He pissed me off and left me exasperated enough times, and we played over many seasons together. But somehow I feel we remained friends despite this. He knew my limits when I captained him, and I knew his when he captained me. He took the time to do his best by you, even if he had issues that held him back all too often. And he did have demons, like all of us do. RCS checked himself into rehab in 2003, and left a lump in my throat when he issued a written apology to those he had pissed off in his more intoxicated moments. He also showed up to the 2003 AGM, despite having just gone public that he was checking himself into recovery in Maple Ridge.
COURAGE +
6. Richard was at Peter Taylor's "farewell to the longtime abode" party on the Westside sometime in 2004. It was brave of him to show. He held it together for most of the night. Those who were there know the details of what happened there. In particular I believe to this day Bruce Taylor was exemplary in his handling of Richard, and Lee MacIsaac also. They reached out and helped with no judgment. I was there, but cannot claim same...
HUMBLE PIE...
7. Richard knew the difference between David Gower and Graham Gooch. These were two English players I tried to emulate in equal part. I loved the batting of both players; Gower's flair and elegance and Gooch's mechanics and concentration. Sadly, I probably ended up with their negative traits too: Gower's laziness and Gooch's penchant for missing straight balls (Terry Alderman anyone?). But RCS was having none of it when I was at the crease, and when I connected, he would boost the shot by yelling, "Reminiscent of a young David Gower."
THANKS!
Richard, we thank you. You have lived a life filled with wonder and curiosity. Again, I sit here as gracious witness to a life well lived and a family well loved.

2007:08:19- SCC wins fourth match in a row
SCC once again put on a phenomenal bowling and fielding performance to bowl Windies II out for 67 at the Windies home ground Mackin park. A couple of SCC players were thinking and hoping that Windies II would turn up with 8 players like they did last game, but this wasn't to be the case. Windies showed up in full eleven with a lot of experienced players among them. It didn't matter, as at present, SCC would give a premier team a run for their money, at least in the bowling and fielding departments. Pom press coming soon. Here's the Scorecard with a short summary

2007:08:13- Richmond III NO MATCH to SCC's supreme bowling and fielding performance
SCC put on the most spectacular bowling and fielding performance seen so far this season, probably by any team in the BCMCL, to bowl out a strong Richmond III eleven for 78. SCC then chased the total down comfortably with 5 wickets to spare. Star of the game again, for a second weekend in a row, was Wayne Best who took five wickets. Wayne had some assistance from Vijay V, Vijay K and Sohan who took some amazing catches. SCC's superb win was marred by an unfortunate brawl triggered by a sore loser in the form of Dave Mann, the captain of Richmond III. Pom Press posted in the articles section. Here's the Scorecard with a short summary

2007:08:06- Wayne's 4fer and Sohan and Sid's partnership save SCC the blushes
After getting an 8 men Pakcan team out for 87, SCC made a game of it by losing five wickets, before Sid and Sohan got together and showed the top order how to bat. Pom Press posted in the articles section. Scorecard.
2007:07:29- SCC DEMOLISHES WEST VAN II
In probably one of the shortest one day cricket games ever played, lasting one hour and fifteen minutes, SCC annihilated West Van II by 10 wickets. Sundar (6.4-4-5-5) and Sohan (6-2-8-4) bowled West Vancouver out for 13 in 12.4 overs. Vijay Kumar helped the bowlers by taking three great catches. 2007:07:19- CLUB FUNDRAISER, A GREAT HIT
Shaughnessy Cricket Club Fundraiser Pub Night at Mahony and Sons was a great hit. Thanks to Paul Harder for organizing it, Sohan Danyal for selling the most tickets, and great big hearty thanks to all those who participated and made it a huge success. SCC also thanks Chris and Peter Mahony for providing a splendid avenue for the fundraiser and Tamara, our waitress, for the phenomenal service. It was wonderful to see 50 people come out, mingle and have a great time. SCC promises more fun events before the end of summer. Pictures will be posted soon in the gallery.
2007:07:11- Great fun at BBQ at Paul Harder's on July 7th
